Harriet was sorry they could'nt get to visit and thanks them for there understanding. The Markhams have moved to a new home in Staten Island. She refers to Mr. Hearse the editor of the New York Journal, she would like a letter of introduction to him from Mr. M.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
